Black Monday is very funny new series on Showtime from Executive Producers Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg. It takes pace during the U.S. stock market crash of 1987 which means it’s filled with ridiculously retro fashion, references, and zingers. While working at the network, I had the opportunity to art direct the graphic packaging for trailers, teases, and episodic promos with much help from the incomparable Brandon Kennedy. Though we explored many approaches, we landed on a look that was inspired in equal parts by aerobics leotards and VHS packaging. The vintage cherry on top was being able to dig up the 1980’s Showtime branding from the archives, dust it off, and use it for all things Black Monday.
